
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Harun Reşit Bağcı of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) in Samsun stated that the “sponge city” approach—which focuses on storing water during periods of abundance and using it in a controlled manner during dry periods—must be implemented in future urban planning, saying, “The cities of the future must be planned according to the sponge city concept.”! Assoc. Prof. Dr. Harun Reşit Bağcı, a faculty member in the Department of Geography at OMÜ’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, noted that cities must be properly planned to address the effects of climate change. He added that promoting the “sponge city” approach—which facilitates water storage—and protecting agricultural and forest areas will play a significant role in reducing the risks of future droughts, floods, and other disasters. Noting that climate change will have significant effects on cities in the future, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bağcı said, “To make our cities safer, more livable, and more comfortable, we need to anticipate these changes and plan accordingly. In recent years, the search for climatic comfort has become increasingly widespread worldwide. Thanks to the analyses and projects developed by scientists, identifying climatically suitable areas in cities has gained great importance. “When we position our cities correctly from a climatic perspective, the energy expended to cool them in the summer and heat them in the winter will decrease,” he said.
